  Intended for performance in the home by fans of popular music, these songs featured colorful covers and mostly romantic themes and lyrics. Many were drawn from popular stage works of the day, and many were written by the composers of New York's famous Tin Pan Alley.

  Art Songs

  These songs were intended for performance by amateur and professional singers in a recital context, and were generally published with understated or even plain covers and in more than one key. Most are settings of poetry, but the dividing line between popular songs and art songs is not distinct, and some pieces could be classified as either.
